Repair or Replace: What Actually Decides It
The windshield repair vs replacement decision comes down to three measurements: how large the damage is, how deep it goes, and where it sits on the glass. My Auto Glass San Diego repairs and replaces windshields across San Diego County, and one published industry standard drives every call we make. Clear the limits below and resin holds the glass together. Miss them and the windshield comes out.
Most drivers judge by how bad it looks. That is the wrong test. A short crack in the wrong spot fails; an alarming-looking chip often repairs in half an hour.
The Repair Limits That Actually Exist
Technicians work from ANSI/AGSC/NWRD ROLAGS 002-2022, the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard. It sets hard maximums by damage type. Grab a tape measure:
- Bullseye or half moon: repairable up to a diameter no larger than one inch (25 mm).
- Star break: diameter of the break not to exceed 3 inches (75 mm).
- Combination break: body diameter, excluding legs, not to exceed 2 inches (50 mm).
- Crack: repairable if no longer than 14 inches (350 mm).
- Surface pit: there is a floor too — minimum repairable damage diameter of not less than 1/8 inch (3 mm).
That 14-inch limit surprises people. Length alone rarely rules out a fix, which we sized up in our post on what size windshield crack can be repaired.
Where the Damage Sits Matters More Than How Big It Is
The driver’s primary viewing area is the glass you actually look through while driving, and the standard treats it far more strictly. Inside that zone, ROLAGS prohibits repair when the damage diameter exceeds 1 inch (25 mm), when the finished pit will be greater than 3/16 inch (5 mm), or when the repair would sit within 4 inches (100 mm) of another repair.
Read that last rule twice. An older rock chip repair can disqualify a new one just by sitting near it, which is how a second chip in one corner becomes windshield replacement San Diego drivers never saw coming. Every repair also leaves a faint mark, and in your sight line at night on the 8, that mark matters.
When Replacement Is the Only Honest Answer
Some damage settles the windshield repair vs replacement question for you: breaks through both layers of laminate, cracks running to the perimeter, inner-layer damage, contamination in the break, and chipping over the black frit band.
Edge cracks deserve attention. Your windshield is structural, not just a window. NHTSA’s FMVSS No. 212, Windshield Mounting exists “to reduce crash injuries and fatalities by providing for retention of the vehicle windshield during a crash.” Damage running into that bonded edge works against the one job the glass has in a crash.
Cost and Insurance: Why Repair Almost Always Wins
Money usually ends the debate. A windshield repair cost stays low because there is no new glass, no molding, no recalibration. Replacing glass on a camera-equipped late-model vehicle is another order of expense.
Here is what most drivers never hear: with comprehensive coverage, many California carriers waive the deductible on a chip repair, because a repair today costs them less than a replacement in six weeks. We bill insurance directly. Our article on whether insurance covers windshield replacement in California walks through the claim.
Waiting flips the math against you. A chip baking through an afternoon in a Mission Valley parking lot spreads, as we explained in our piece on how summer heat spreads a windshield chip. Past the ROLAGS limits, the inexpensive option is gone.

Replacement Pulls in Calibration and Cure Time
Drive a 2016 or newer vehicle with lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control and a camera sits behind the windshield. Replace the glass and it has to be re-aimed. That is ADAS calibration — Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — and skipping it leaves your safety systems reading the road from the wrong angle. We do it in-house through our windshield calibration service, in the same visit.
Adhesive cure time matters too. The Auto Glass Safety Council defines minimum drive-away time as “the length of time the vehicle should remain stationary after any auto glass installation to allow proper bonding,” which varies by adhesive and conditions. A technician who cannot give you that number is guessing. Our guide to ADAS calibration after windshield replacement covers the rest.
Windshield Repair vs Replacement: Judge It at Your Car
- Cover it with a quarter. A quarter is just under an inch wide. If the damage vanishes underneath, you are inside the one-inch bullseye limit.
- Drag a fingernail across it. If your nail catches hard and the break feels like it reaches through, plan on replacement.
- Look at the edges. A crack touching the perimeter is a replacement, whatever its length.
- Sit in the driver’s seat. Damage in your normal sight line triggers the stricter viewing-area rules.
- Count old repairs. A previous fix within 4 inches of the new damage rules out repairing it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a chip repair cost compared to a replacement?
A repair is a small fraction of a replacement, and with comprehensive coverage it is often paid in full with no deductible. Replacement pricing depends on the vehicle, the glass, and whether calibration is required. Send your year, make, and model for both numbers.
Can you repair a crack longer than my hand?
Often, yes. ROLAGS allows crack repair up to 14 inches (350 mm), so length alone rarely disqualifies you. Position, depth, and contamination decide it. Over 20 years of San Diego auto glass work says the crack you assume is hopeless usually beats the small chip dead center in front of you.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the car in?
We come to you. Most windshield chip repair San Diego customers book happens in a driveway or a work lot, and for auto glass repair San Diego commuters need before a shift, we work around your schedule. Our Ronson Road shop is there if you would rather drop off.
Will the damage still be visible after a repair?
Slightly. A good repair restores strength and stops the spread; it does not erase the mark. Expect a faint blemish at the impact point. More answers live on our auto glass FAQ page.
