Windshield Chip Repair in San Diego
A rock chip is the cheapest windshield problem you will ever have, as long as it gets fixed before it turns into a crack. My Auto Glass repairs windshield chips across San Diego County in about thirty minutes, at your home, your work or our Kearny Mesa shop, and on most comprehensive policies it costs you nothing. We have been doing this for more than twenty years, with over 225 Google reviews averaging 4.9 stars.
Identify Your Chip
Not every chip behaves the same way. The shape of the break tells us how well resin will fill it and how likely it is to spread:
- Bullseye. A round, cone-shaped break with a dark ring. The easiest type to repair and usually close to invisible afterwards.
- Star break. Short cracks radiating from the impact point. Repairs well while the legs are short. Once the legs pass about two inches, it is behaving like a crack.
- Half moon. A partial bullseye shaped like a crescent. Repairs cleanly.
- Combination break. A bullseye with star legs coming off it. The most common chip from freeway gravel and very repairable if it is caught early.
- Surface pit. A small nick that did not break through the outer layer. Often does not need resin at all, and we will tell you if it does not.
As a rule of thumb, a chip smaller than a quarter that has not reached the edge of the glass can be repaired. The full measuring guide is in what size windshield crack can be repaired.
How Chip Repair Works
The whole job takes about thirty minutes and you can drive the moment we are done:
- Inspect. We check the type, size and position of the chip and confirm the inner layer of glass is intact.
- Clean and dry. Loose glass, dirt and moisture come out of the break. A clean break takes resin far better.
- Vacuum. A bridge tool pulls the air out of the chip so resin can reach every leg of the break.
- Inject resin. Clear, optically matched resin is pressed into the break under pressure.
- UV cure. Ultraviolet light hardens the resin in minutes and bonds it to the glass.
- Finish. We scrape the surface flush and polish it, so your wipers run smoothly over the repair.
What to Do Until We Get There
The first day after a chip matters more than most drivers realise. San Diego's heat cycling turns chips into cracks fastest in a parking lot, not on the freeway:
- Put a piece of clear tape over the chip to keep dirt and water out.
- Park in the shade or a garage when you can.
- Skip the car wash, and do not blast the defroster or the air conditioning straight at the glass.
- Avoid slamming doors, which flexes the glass.
Why this matters here: why a windshield chip will not stay small in San Diego's heat.
DIY Kit or Professional Repair?
A store-bought kit can work on a small, fresh bullseye. The trouble is what happens when it does not. Kits use a plunger rather than a real vacuum, so they rarely pull all the air out of a star or combination break, and resin that cures with air trapped inside leaves a weak, cloudy repair. Because cured resin blocks the break, a failed DIY repair usually cannot be redone, and a chip that would have cost nothing on your insurance becomes a windshield replacement. If your policy covers chip repair at no cost, the kit is the more expensive option.
Chip Repair and Insurance
Most comprehensive policies cover windshield chip repair with no deductible, because insurers would rather pay for a repair now than a replacement later. A glass claim goes through comprehensive rather than collision, so it is treated differently from an at-fault accident. Check your own policy with your carrier. Bigger Than a Chip?
If the damage has already spread into a line, windshield repair in San Diego covers what cracks can still be saved. If it has grown past roughly six inches, reached the edge of the glass or sits right in front of the driver, windshield replacement in San Diego is the honest answer, and we will tell you that rather than attempting a repair that will not hold. Windshield Chip Repair FAQs
Can you repair a windshield chip when it is raining?
Yes, as long as the break itself is dry. Water trapped in a chip blocks the resin, so in wet weather we dry the break before injecting, or do the repair under cover in a garage, carport or at our Kearny Mesa shop. Taping the chip as soon as it happens keeps moisture out and makes this much easier.
Can the same chip be repaired twice?
Usually not. Once resin has cured in a break, new resin cannot get into it. That is why a cheap or DIY repair that fails is a problem: it can turn a chip that was easy to fix into a windshield that has to be replaced.
Can you repair a chip in the driver's line of sight?
Small chips in the driver's view can often be repaired, but even a good repair leaves a faint mark, and anything that distorts the driver's view is a safety issue. If the chip sits directly in front of the driver, we look at it first and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement is the right call.
Will chip repair affect my ADAS camera?
No. The windshield stays in the car, so the camera behind the mirror keeps its aim and no recalibration is needed. The only exception is a chip right in front of the camera window, which may need replacement and calibration instead.
How many chips can be repaired on one windshield?
Most windshields can take several repairs, typically up to three chips that are spread out and each within repair limits. Several breaks clustered together weaken the glass more than one, and at that point replacement is usually the safer answer.
Will the chip disappear completely?
No, and be sceptical of anyone who says it will. Repair restores strength and stops the spread. Most repairs go from clearly visible to a faint mark you have to look for.
