What Windshield Calibration Is — and Why San Diego Drivers Can’t Skip It
Almost every vehicle built from 2016 onward has a forward-facing ADAS camera mounted behind the windshield. It powers lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warnings. The moment your windshield is removed and replaced, that camera’s aim shifts — sometimes by only a millimeter or two, which is more than enough to make the system read the road incorrectly. Windshield calibration re-aligns that camera to the manufacturer’s exact specification so your safety systems work the way they were engineered to. A glass shop that replaces your windshield without recalibrating has done half the job.
Static vs. Dynamic Calibration
There are two calibration methods, and many vehicles require one or both. Static calibration is performed in a controlled shop environment using manufacturer-specified target boards positioned at precise distances and angles in front of the vehicle. Dynamic calibration is completed by driving the vehicle at set speeds while a factory-grade scan tool finishes the alignment. Some makes require a dual calibration — static first, then a dynamic road test to confirm. My Auto Glass performs calibration in-house as part of your appointment, so you don’t have to book a separate, costly trip to the dealership.
Which Vehicles Need ADAS Calibration?
If your vehicle has any camera-based driver-assistance feature, it needs calibration after a windshield replacement. That covers the vast majority of 2018-and-newer cars and many 2016–2017 models. Common systems include Honda Sensing, Toyota Safety Sense, Subaru EyeSight, Nissan ProPILOT, Mazda i-Activsense, and Tesla Autopilot. A quick rule of thumb: if there’s a camera module at the top-center of your windshield, or your dash shows lane-departure or forward-collision icons, recalibration is required — not optional.
Windshield Calibration Cost in San Diego
When calibration is done at the same time as your windshield replacement, it’s far more cost-effective than booking it separately at a dealer. Most California comprehensive auto-insurance policies that cover glass also cover the required calibration — meaning many of our customers pay little or nothing out of pocket. We verify your coverage and bill your insurer directly. For a full breakdown, see our guide to windshield calibration cost in San Diego.

Frequently Asked Questions About Windshield Calibration
How long does windshield calibration take?
Most calibrations add 30–60 minutes to the appointment. Static calibration is done in our shop right after the adhesive cures; dynamic calibration requires a short road test. We confirm the system passes before you leave.
Can I skip calibration after a windshield replacement?
No. Driving with an uncalibrated ADAS camera means features like automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist may misfire or fail silently. It’s a safety risk, and on many vehicles a dashboard warning will remain until calibration is completed.
Does insurance cover windshield calibration?
In most cases, yes. If your comprehensive policy covers windshield replacement, it typically covers the manufacturer-required calibration too. We verify your coverage up front and bill your insurer directly. Call (619) 399-6001 and we’ll check your policy.
Do you calibrate at my location or in the shop?
Both, depending on your vehicle. Many models can be dynamically calibrated on a mobile visit; others require static targets that we set up in our San Diego shop. We’ll tell you which your vehicle needs when you book.
How do I know if my car needs calibration?
If your vehicle has lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, adaptive cruise control, or a camera mounted at the top of the windshield, it needs calibration after any glass replacement. Tell us your year, make, and model and we’ll confirm.
