Windshield Repair vs. Replacement
How big of a crack in a windshield can be repaired?
As a rule of thumb, we can repair most cracks up to about six inches long and chips up to roughly the size of a quarter - as long as the damage has not reached the edge of the glass and is not sitting directly in the driver's line of sight. Past that point, replacement is the safe call rather than the expensive one.
Full breakdown with examples: What size windshield crack can be repaired?
What size chip or rock chip can be repaired?
Bullseye, star and combination chips up to about an inch across are usually repairable, and so are most small pits. The bigger factor is age. A fresh chip fills cleanly; one that has been collecting dirt and water for six months does not. Get it looked at early and the repair is quick and inexpensive.
What kinds of windshield damage cannot be repaired?
Four situations almost always mean replacement: the crack runs to the edge of the glass, it is longer than roughly six inches, it sits in the driver's primary line of sight, or the inner layer of the laminate is damaged. Damage that has already been filled with a DIY kit generally cannot be repaired properly afterward either.

Will a repair make the crack disappear completely?
No - and any shop promising that is overselling. A proper resin repair restores the structural strength of the glass and stops the damage from spreading. Cosmetically it usually improves the appearance a great deal, but a faint mark often remains where the impact was.
Can a repaired chip crack again later?
It is uncommon. Once the resin is cured under UV light it bonds to the glass and restores strength at the damage point. What does cause a repeat is a fresh impact, or damage that was too far gone to fill completely in the first place - which is exactly why we will tell you when a repair is not the right call.
How long does a chip repair take?
Most chip and small-crack repairs take about 30 minutes, and we can do them at your home or workplace. If you would rather stop damage before it starts, here are our tips for avoiding a cracked windshield.
Windshield Replacement
How much does windshield replacement cost in San Diego?
It comes down to three things: your vehicle's year, make and model; whether the glass carries features like a rain sensor, heating elements, acoustic interlayer or heads-up display; and whether your vehicle needs ADAS calibration afterward. A 2008 sedan and a 2024 SUV with a camera behind the mirror are not the same job.
We quote free and bill most insurers directly - get a free estimate. For the full cost breakdown, see how much windshield replacement costs in San Diego.
How long does windshield replacement take?
The replacement itself usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. If your vehicle needs ADAS calibration, allow additional time for that procedure. We will give you the total when we quote the job, not after.
How soon can I drive after my windshield is replaced?
The urethane adhesive needs time to cure, and the exact safe drive-away time depends on the adhesive used and the weather that day. Your technician will give you a specific time before leaving. For the first day, leave a window cracked slightly, avoid slamming the doors, and leave the retention tape in place.
Do you use OEM or aftermarket glass?
We use top-tier glass from the same manufacturers that supply the automakers - Pilkington, AGC and PGW - and we can source OEM glass when your vehicle or your insurer requires it.
Do you replace Tesla windshields?
Yes. Tesla glass is a specialty of ours, including the calibration work the driver-assist camera package requires afterward. See Tesla windshield replacement and glass repair in San Diego.
Is your work warrantied?
We back our installations with a lifetime installation warranty and offer 100% satisfaction on all of our work. That covers the workmanship - leaks, wind noise and stress issues that trace back to the install. See everything we do.
Windshield Calibration & ADAS
What is windshield calibration (ADAS recalibration)?
Newer vehicles carry cameras and sensors mounted to or behind the windshield that run lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning. When the glass comes out, those sensors lose their reference point. Calibration re-aims them to the manufacturer's specification.
More detail on our windshield calibration service.
Does my car need calibration after a windshield replacement?
If your vehicle has a camera behind the rearview mirror or any driver-assist features, almost certainly yes. Most vehicles from roughly 2018 onward do. We check your VIN before the job so there are no surprises on the invoice.
What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?
Static calibration is done in the shop, with manufacturer targets set at measured distances from the vehicle. Dynamic calibration is done by driving the vehicle at set speeds on well-marked roads while the system relearns. Some vehicles need one, some need both - the manufacturer's procedure decides, not us.
What does windshield calibration cost?
It varies by manufacturer and by which procedure your vehicle requires. It is quoted together with the replacement, never added afterward as a surprise. See understanding windshield calibration cost in San Diego.
What happens if I skip calibration?
Your safety systems can read the road incorrectly - braking late, steering wrong on lane-keep, or throwing dashboard faults. It can also become an issue with your insurer after a collision. Calibration is not an upsell; on an ADAS-equipped vehicle it is the completion of the job.
Door Glass, Side Windows & Back Glass
How much does driver side window replacement cost?
Side glass is generally less expensive than a windshield. The price comes down to your vehicle and which specific piece is broken - front door, rear door, quarter glass or vent glass.

My window was smashed - can you come out today?
Call (619) 399-6001. Break-ins are the most common side-glass job we do and we prioritise them, because an open window leaves your vehicle exposed. Cleaning the tempered glass fragments out of the door cavity, seat tracks and carpet is part of the job, not an extra.
Do you replace back glass, quarter glass and vent glass?
Yes - rear windshields (back glass), quarter glass, vent glass and door glass, on domestic and foreign vehicles as well as trucks, RVs and heavy equipment. See all our auto glass services.
Why does side glass shatter into pebbles when a windshield only cracks?
They are different products. Windshields are laminated - two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer that holds everything together when it breaks. Side and rear glass is tempered, engineered to break into small blunt pieces rather than shards. That is also why side glass cannot be repaired; it has to be replaced.
Can you secure my vehicle if the glass has to be ordered?
If a specific piece has to be ordered in for your vehicle, we can cover the opening in the meantime so your car is not sitting open overnight. Get in touch and we will sort it out.
Power Windows & Regulators
What are the signs a power window regulator is going bad?
A window that moves slowly or unevenly, slips back down on its own, makes a grinding or clicking noise, or comes off track. Any of those means the regulator is on its way out.
Signs your car's power window regulator is going bad covers each symptom in detail.
Is it the regulator or the motor?
If you can hear the motor running but the glass does not move, it is usually the regulator. If you hear nothing at all, it may be the motor, the switch or a fuse. We diagnose before we quote - see our power window regulator repair service, or read how to tell the motor from the regulator yourself in under a minute.
My window is moving slowly. Is that urgent?
It is an early warning, not a nuisance. Slow travel usually means the regulator is binding or the motor is straining, and complete failure tends to follow soon after - often with the window stuck down. Here is why you should not ignore it.
Can you fix a window that is stuck down?
That is an urgent job and we treat it as one. Call (619) 399-6001 or (858) 353-2886 and we will get you scheduled.
Insurance, Deductibles & Payment
Is auto glass repair and replacement covered under my insurance policy?
If you have a comprehensive auto insurance policy, most likely you are covered! Often, comprehensive insurance plans waive the deductible for windshield repair entirely. For auto glass replacement, customers with comprehensive coverage are responsible for paying their deductible while their insurance company is billed for the remaining balance. If you have auto insurance or are unsure if your coverage applies towards the cost of auto glass repair or replacement, contact MY Auto Glass Masters today at (858) 353-2886 or (619) 399-6001 and a trained customer service representative will help answer your questions regarding your policy's coverage.
More on how coverage works: does insurance cover a damaged windshield?
Do I have options when it comes to paying my insurance deductible?
Yes! MY Auto Glass Masters values insurance customers! We make payment easy by accepting cash, checks and all major credit cards including Visa, Master Card, American Express, and Discover. Let us show you how simple it is to get your car back on the road and looking good by calling one of our trained customer service representatives at (619) 399-6001.
Will my auto insurance rates go up if I make an auto glass claim?
Usually not! Many insurance companies do not count damaged glass as a claim against your policy. Most glass damage is covered through comprehensive and generally does not affect your monthly rate. Each individual policy varies. Compare your policy or check with your insurance agent for specific details. As always, MY Auto Glass is committed to making the process as painless as possible. Let us help you sort it all out! Call MY Auto Glass at (619) 399-6001.
Do you bill my insurance company directly?
Yes. We work with most major carriers and handle the claim paperwork, so in most cases the only thing you pay is your deductible, if one applies. Have your policy number and the date the damage happened ready when you call.
Is it illegal to drive with a cracked windshield in California?
California restricts anything that obstructs the driver's view, so a crack sitting in your line of sight can earn you a fix-it ticket. Damage that interferes with the sweep of the wipers is also citable.

Mobile Service, Scheduling & Service Areas

Either works. Most of our work is mobile - we come to your home or your workplace so you are not sitting in a waiting room for two hours. You are also welcome at our shop at 7343 Ronson Rd. Suite T, San Diego, CA 92111.
What areas do you serve?
All of San Diego County. We have dedicated pages for Chula Vista, Clairemont, El Cajon, Escondido, La Mesa, Mira Mesa, National City and Oceanside.
See every area we cover on our service areas page - and if your city is not listed, call us anyway. We travel.
What do you need from me in order to schedule?
Your vehicle's year, make and model; which piece of glass is damaged; whether the vehicle has driver-assist features; and your insurance information if you are filing a claim. A clear photo of the damage helps a lot. Start with a free estimate or contact us.
Can you work outside if it is raining?
Urethane adhesive needs dry, reasonably warm conditions to cure correctly. If the weather will not cooperate at your location, we will work under cover or reschedule rather than compromise the bond. A windshield is a structural part of your vehicle - it is not worth rushing.
What are your hours, and how quickly can you get out to me?
Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm. Many jobs can be scheduled same day or next day, depending on glass availability for your vehicle. Call (858) 353-2886 or (619) 399-6001.
